Suspended P.E.I. Senator Mike Duffy has finally decided to head out of the cave and stop avoiding the media as he was doing since the RCMP announced to lay 31 different charges against him. According to a statement issued by the suspended Senator, he reiterated to have not broken any laws.

A written statement was addressed by Mr. Duffy to The Guardian on Friday after they requested to have an interview. He mentioned that “it would be inappropriate of me to comment as this matter is now before the courts. The court process will allow Canadians to hear all of the facts.” He added that “they will then understand that I have not violated the criminal code.” The charges announced by the RCMP on Thursday reportedly include fraud, breach of trust and bribery. If a conviction is made in the case, Duffy might end up facing prison time up to a maximum of 14 years for the bribery charge.

According to the RCMP, the long list of charges against Duffy encompass his claims for living expenses, claims for travel expenses unconnected with Senate business and fraudulent contracts. Additionally, the charges also cover the issue of the $90,000 Duffy allegedly received from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff Nigel Wright. Prior to his statement, Duffy remained inside his cottage in Cavendish all day on Thursday even though several media outlets were waiting outside to have his comments on the ongoing issue, Duffy did not speak to any of them.
