Father of the Toronto teen inexplicably shot and killed by police on a TTC streetcar last summer, Nabil Yatim, has mentioned in a statement that he still have many questions that remain unanswered a year later. 18-year-old Sammy Yatim was shot more than once during a police encounter on an empty Dundas streetcar on July 27, 2013. A video of the incident was recorded by a bystander that caused public outrage over police use of force.

According to Nabil (Bill) Yatim, “those videos show what happened that night, how his situation was mishandled, and the excessive response to those horrifying few moments.” He asked “why was he shot so many times? Why was he Tasered as he lay dying on the floor of that streetcar? These questions continue to haunt me.” Former Supreme Court justice, Frank Iacobucci, mentioned in a report issued on Thursday that police should carry more Tasers, wear body cameras and set up 24-hour mental health teams. In response to that, Police Chief Bill Blair promised to move on the recommendations “with a strong sense of urgency and resolve.”

Yatim family has announced to have filed an $8-million lawsuit against the Toronto Police Service, asserting that the officer’s on-duty were inadequately trained and used unnecessarily excessive force. According to the statement of claim, the family has alleged to have had suffered from anxiety, depression and physical and psychological symptoms. Bill Yatim mentioned that “no parent should have to live through what I have endured.”
