Vancouver Police has said that it is fully prepared to ensure safety of more than 300,000 people anticipated to convene into Vancouver’s West End tonight for the first night of the Celebration of Light. Since the event is family oriented event, police says it will work to make sure it stays like that. It aims to apply the same rules as last year, especially the restriction of open liquor and no smoking on the beach.

According to Vancouver Police Sergeant, Randy Fincham, “we do have extensive plans to be prepared in the event of something happening. Of course we wouldn’t want anything to happen that would impact someone’s safety or someone’s ability to come down and enjoy the fireworks.” Additionally, Finch shared that officers plan to videotape the crowd so “there will be police throughout the parks and beaches that are video taping the crowd. In the event that somebody is mis-behaving, there is a pretty good chance that they’ll be caught on video. Likewise, the police expect that they’ll be videotaped as well.”

Transit Police representative, Anne Drennan, said that the event is different than any other in the city. Drennan alleged that in addition to the massive crowds, there’s going to be one more problem due to hot summer nights. Drennan added that “we tend to see quite a lot of alcohol and a lot of the problems that we encounter as a result of people, many cases young people, who are intoxicated get into fights and can’t look after themselves, that kind of thing.”
