Several animal cruelty charges recommended by the BC SPCA are now approved by the court against the Langley dog walker, Emma Paulsen. A BC SPCA representative, Marcie Moriarty, found that six dogs died of heatstroke because they were left unattended in a hot vehicle back in May. According to Moriarty, Paulsen has been charged with five counts related to animal cruelty, while a sixth charge is one of public mischief.

Moriarty explained that “she’s been charged with three separate sections under the Criminal Code.  One pertaining to killing of an animal, one pertaining to causing unnecessary suffering and pain, and another failing to provide adequate care.” It was highlighted that these charges are first of their kind in BC. It was mentioned that “basically, this is precedent setting in terms of the charges. To my knowledge, no one in BC has yet to be charged under a offence associated with failing to protect an animal from circumstances that are likely to cause the stress. ”

The BC SPCA has alleged that “these cases take time if you do it right. We feel that has happened in this case.” The dogs were found in a ditch in Abbotsford. While announcing the approval of charges, Moriarty stressed on refraining from leaving pets unattended in vehicles in sweltering conditions. She alleged that “it boggles my mind.  I’m sick and tired of telling people not to do this.  It should be evident to anyone who has sat in a car in the last month, it’s hot out there, please, please don’t do it!”
