In light of a series of sexual assaults reported at or near UBC last year, the university has announced to have made improvements to their safety procedures in time for the fall term. According to the announcement, the university has planned to increase lighting, change the landscape, add bike patrols and expand the Safewalk Program.

A law professor specializing in security and surveillance, Ben Goold, stressed that the goal of these measures is to make the campus safer. He explained that “we’ve always been a very safe campus and we continue to be, so the sexual assaults that happened last year were really, really very shocking and unfortunate.  And it’s been something that we’ve thought very carefully about and we’re looking at ways of just making what is already a safe campus, even safer.” Godd elucidated that “we are a very large campus, spread over about 1,000 acres with up to 60,000 people working, studying or living here.  So, we are investing approximately $750,000 in improving lighting and landscaping to make sure it’s more open and well-lit.” He also pointed out that we are considering to improve the university’s “Blue Phone” system and introducing new mobile safety apps too.

In his remarks, UBC President Arvind Gupta confirmed that the university is acting on the advice of a campus safety working group established following the series of sex assaults last year. He explained that “we also agree with safety experts that ultimately the best crime prevention is a caring, connected and respectful community. This is why we’ll also be focusing over the long term on education and community building initiatives.”
