Prime Minister Stephen Harper has named Janice Charette as the new Clerk of the Privy Council, after former clerk Wayne Wouters announced his retirement on Wednesday. Prior to her recent appointment, Charette was deputy clerk of the Privy Council and associate secretary to the cabinet. She will take over the new role from Oct. 6, 2014 onwards and become the second female Clerk of the Privy Council in Canadian history.

Announcing the decision, Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated that “I am very pleased to appoint Ms. Charette to this important role as the head of Canada’s public service. Ms. Charette’s knowledge and many years of experience will be a tremendous asset and I look forward to continuing to work with her.” On the other hand, Liberal MP Marc Garneau also mentioned on Wednesday that “I think she should tell the government of Canada, and I’m talking about the prime minister, that there is a fine civil service in this country. Let it blossom, let it give you the best advice. Let them sometimes propose things that are outside the envelope. Don’t come down hard on them every time you get criticized and you’re trying to deflect the blame.”

Starting federal public service in 1984, Charette served as the deputy minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, deputy minister of Citizenship and Immigration before spending time in the Privy Council Office. Meanwhile, she also served as associate deputy minister of Health, deputy secretary to the Cabinet (Plans and Consultation) in the Privy Council Office, and senior assistant deputy minister at the Department of Justice.
