Mounties have confirmed that a convicted murderer, 41-year-old Norman Gilbert Riel, has escaped from a federal prison, Mission Institution, on Sunday afternoon. The RCMP has confirmed that he was last seen getting into a white Chevrolet Suburban SUV that was waiting for him when he fled. According to Mission RCMP Sgt., Shaun Wright, it is yet to be determined how Riel managed to escaped, but his absence was noted during a prisoner count.

Riel is supposed to be serving time for the 1994 slaying of Patrick Pugh, when a marijuana dealer was shot dead after four masked men with guns broke into his East Vancouver penthouse. The court case established that Riel shot Pugh in the back of the head after he refused to hand over any money. Several months after the incident, Riel was finally arrested while living in Las Vegas. He confessed the crime to an undercover police officer posing as a drug dealer. Police confirmed that Riel is known to travel to the U.S. to avoid arrest.

According to the police, Riel has a long criminal record that also includes armed robbery, prostitution-related crimes and firearms offences committed in Edmonton and Vancouver. One such crime includes an incident when Riel leaned out of a car window and fired four shots at a prostitute in a cab. Authorities have also made an announcement for cash reward of up to $2,000 is in lieu of any potential information that may lead to Riel’s arrest.
