Canada has announced to have sent 15 soldiers to participate in a military exercise taking place in Poland as part of international efforts to “promote peace and stability” in Central and Eastern Europe. According to the announcement, 15 personnel of The Canadian Army will visit Lublin, Poland, where operation Maple Arch 14 is scheduled to continue till Sept. 18.

The official statement issued by the Canadian defence department mentioned that its soldiers will work with Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian personnel, focusing on “training a multinational infantry battalion headquarters comprised primarily of the Polish 5th Podhale Rifleman Battalion with Ukrainian and Lithuanian staff officer augmentation.” It was added that majority of the soldiers on the exercise are from the 5th Canadian Division based in Halifax. Defence Minister Rob Nicholson stated that “Canada is committed to building capabilities and nurturing partnerships in Eastern Europe, particularly in the wake of the Putin regime’s aggressive military actions in the region.”

Commander of the Canadian Army, Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse, elucidated that the exercise “provides an environment to enhance our military readiness toward a multi-purpose, combat-capable force, able to…respond to a multitude of threats.” In response to the recent incident of three Russian aircraft buzzing HMCS Toronto in the Black Sea, Canada’s chief of defence staff, Gen. Tom Lawson, commented that the Russian behaviour was “slightly provocative but not overly hostile.” He added that “our captain of that ship and the entire group he was with for that exercise were expecting anything and they were very well-trained to handle it, as they did without any reaction.”
