The Ontario NDP’s Andrea Horwath has laid harsh criticism over the Liberals’ considering the issue of selling pieces of provincial Crown corporations. These remarks have come at a time when the party leader aims to boost her support in the party ahead of the upcoming provincial council meeting and upcoming leadership review.

According to a statement issued by Ms. Horwath on Wednesday, she stressed that public agencies should remain entirely owned by the government and their major assets, including power stations and nuclear reactors, should not be sold to private companies. She mentioned at Queen’s Park that “we should keep OPG [Ontario Power Generation], Hydro One and the LCBO in public hands where they can benefit all of us, not just the well-connected.” Furthermore, it was added that “the fact is when Ontarians own something, we can make sure that it works for us, that it works in our best interests.”

These remarks were issued in response to the news confirming that the governing Liberals appointed Ed Clark, chief executive officer of the TD Bank, in order to lead a panel to look at the province’s assets and make suggestions on what can be sold. The Liberals are hopeful to find more money in the corporations to help fund highways and public transit. In response to Horwath’s criticism, Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid mentioned that “Andrea Horwath is being irresponsible by saying the government should never review assets, and that it should never look at maximizing the benefit for the people of Ontario,” adding that “we’re not going to make that mistake.”
