Authorities were alerted about a black bear wandering in a southwest Calgary community, which scrambled up a tree before being tranquillized and transported from the neighbourhood. Several Calgary residents in Bayview had to wake up to the news of staying indoors since a bear was seen running through the residential area.
An individual delivering newspapers alerted the police at around 7 a.m. after spotting the bear near the 2000 block of Bay Shore Road S.W. near South Glenmore Park. Duty inspector Nancy Farmer explained that “the bear ran across the street and climbed into a tree,” adding that “it looks like he climbed up about 20 feet up.” Furthermore, the farmer alleged that the bear was running away from vehicles and trying to avoid humans. In addition to the bear, police also looked out for cubs but found none.
Consequently, Fish and Wildlife officers were called at the scene at around 10:30 am, after which the bear was tranquillized and transported out of the neighbourhood. Fish and Wildlife spokesman, Brendan Cox, confirmed that the capture went smoothly since the bear was calm. It was highlighted that the “officers are going to be relocating him outside of the city. The intent with that is to get him back to a less populated area, a place with some natural food sources for him.” Earlier this week, safety officials urged Calgarians to be on the lookout for wildlife venturing into the city following a sudden summer snowstorm.
