During a press conference on Thursday, Police Chief Devon Clunis revealed several new details on the Tina Fontaine murder investigation, alleging that he has discovered that two Winnipeg police members had contact with Fontaine on Aug. 8, i.e. the last day she was seen alive.

It was revealed on Wednesday that police and paramedics had contact with Tina Fontaine, in separate incidents, on that last day the teenager was seen alive in August. Clunis claims to have learned of these instances on Sept. 3 and decided to have ordered an investigation and reassigned the members immediately. The body of 15-year-old Fontaine was found in a bag in the Red River in Winnipeg on Aug. 17. According to the details, police spot-checked a car that Fontaine was in on Aug. 8, when she was with an impaired man who was taken away by police but Fontaine was let go.

In his remarks, Police Supt. Danny Smyth alleged that he is still investigating whether officers acted improperly upon finding a missing person because “if officers come into contact with a person reported missing, I would expect them to take that person into their care.” Smyth stressed that it’s unclear as yet, what happened on Aug. 8 when the two members encountered Fontaine because the members haven’t been interviewed yet. Whereas, Tina’s great-aunt and her caregiver for much of her short life, Thelma Favel, alleged that “if the police were doing their job, I wouldn’t be having this conversation with you.”
