Upon announcing that he has received a major endorsement on Tuesday morning, Toronto mayoral candidate Doug Ford spurred immediate confusion regarding whether this “will this be a serious endorsement or a joke?” Soon after beginning his press conference, Ford grilled his opponents for gathering endorsements to prove that the one-term city councillor would be taking the latter route.

Ford stressed that the only endorsement he needs is of “the people,” while adding that the approval of just one Torontonian that was too good not to share. Ford revealed that that person to be his key rival candidate, John Tory, endorsed him earlier during an interview in 2010. That was the time when, Toronto hadn’t seen four years of Doug Ford in city council and Rob Ford in the mayor’s office. During a Tuesday morning press conference by Ford, he mentioned that “folks, this is a political election and some people want to make it about political endorsements, so I found one.” He added that “I found a glowing endorsement from the most unlikely person. My friend John Tory once told the Toronto Star ‘Doug is a smart, button-down, no-nonsense business person. If you are looking for a better run government, Doug Ford is the kind of person you would want.”

Meanwhile, Ford also unveiled a new ad highlighting Tory’s “endorsement” and mentioned that “when I’m elected I won’t be in anyone’s pockets.” Ford mentioned that “I will repay the people by building subways, fixing roads and cutting 15% off the land transfer tax. The only endorsement my campaign needs is from you.”

  1. If the people have already spoken, why not just cancel the election and let Kim Il Ford take his rightful place?
