Former Conservative and now independent MP convicted of Elections Canada charges on Friday, Dean Del Mastro, insisted that the judge’s decision was wrong and confirmed having no plans to step down as Peterborough’s MP. According to Justice Lisa Cameron’s verdict announced on Friday, Del Mastro was found guilty on three of the four charges filed against him while the fourth was stayed. On the other hand, Mastro’s former official agent, Richard McCarthy, was also convicted in the hour-long summation of her findings.

Consequently, Del Mastro is now facing a $2,000 fine and the possibility of being sentences up to a year in jail on each charge. Responding to the judge’s decision outside the court, Del Mastro insisted that the judge got it wrong and alleged that “ultimately, I know what the truth is.” He explained that “that’s her opinion. I respect the judge, but at the same time I know the truth,” adding that “I intend to still occupy (my seat).” Del Mastro stated that “I received more votes than anyone in my riding in history.”

Upon inquiry about his views on the judge’s determination that he cheated to win that seat, Mastro alleged that “that’s not true.” The Canada Elections Act says anyone convicted of an offence under the act should be barred from holding office for five years from the date of conviction, hence Del Mastro runs the risk of losing his seat. However, Del Mastro stated that “this is obviously not a final decision,” adding that “I guess that means we’ll be looking at the judge’s decision.”
