Waterloo Regional Police has confirmed that its special guns and gangs unit is vigorously looking after almost seven street gangs that claim the region as their home. A supervisor overseeing a group of five detective constables, Sgt. Andy Harrington, mentioned that his team is monitoring up to 350 people who are suspected of being associated with the gangs started in 2007.

Sgt. Harrington explained that several of these gangs’ activities are related to trafficking of illicit drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and crystal methamphetamine. He stressed that “we have routine investigations of heroin” because “there is a tonne of heroin.” According to the police, these street gangs normally run along ethnic lines and hail from high-density neighbourhoods. Harrington pointed out that “there is a youth multicultural gang phenomenon,” explaining to not have seen youth segregating themselves from other nationalities but involving all groups. Sgt. Harrington added that “they are not discriminatory. They are all together.”

Furthermore, Harrington explained that the youth use social media to publicize their allegiances to street gangs. He stated that “groups are fluid and they come and go,” referring to the Slingers who were present in the region. 20-year-old black man, Howard Joel Munroe, was stabbed to death in Victoria Park on Victoria Day weekend in 2001 by members of the Slingers, i.e. a white street gang. A street gang is a group of three or more members that have a common symbol or identifier and have found a common purpose.
