Canadian Forces Conduct Airstrikes in Iraq, Target ISIS Artillery

Officials have confirmed that the Canadian Forces carried out additional airstrikes in Iraq, in compliance of being part of the coalition mission against ISIS militants, which where focused on an area near Baiji, Iraq, about 200 kilometres north of Baghdad. The airstrikes are believed to have taken out a piece of ISIS artillery.

The U.S. Department of Defense issued an official statement on Monday to confirm that a total of 18 airstrikes were conducted in Iraq between from Nov. 7 to 10, including seven near Baiji. According to the press statement, the seven airstrikes struck “three small ISIL units, and destroyed an ISIL sniper position and two ISIL vehicles, one of which was used for construction.” Furthermore, the U.S. statement stated that all aircraft “departed the strike areas safely” and “airstrike assessments are based on initial reports.”

Whereas on the other hand, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson mentioned in a statement issued on Tuesday that that he commends the “courageous dedication” of Canadian Forces members. He mentioned that “on this Remembrance Day, we reflect on the service and sacrifice of our veterans and serving members for their courageous dedication to our country. I also commend the nearly 600 men and women in uniform for their tremendous work today in the international fight to degrade ISIL.” It was added that “this strike demonstrates Canada’s firm resolve to tackle the threat of terrorism and stand with our allies against ISIL’s atrocities against innocent women, children and men.”
