Toronto’s newly elected mayor, John Tory, announced his action plan to solve the city’s traffic congestion problems and assured that residents will be able to see relief early in the New Year. Mr. Tory campaigned heavily on reducing gridlock and vowed that he is still determined to battle the constant bottlenecks that result in lost productivity and make everyday life challenging for Torontonians.

In his remarks, Mr. Tory stated that “I was sent to city hall to act on traffic, among other things,” adding that “I am the mayor of Toronto, not the sheriff. But I can say when it comes to traffic, there is a new sheriff in town. We can’t go on this way.” Addressing reporters in front of an array of monitors at the city’s traffic management centre, Mr. Tory, stated that congestion is also top of mind for residents. He explained that “wherever I go in the city … people say that traffic congestion is the single most frustrating thing about living in Toronto.” Consequently, Tory informed reporters that “that is why I’m standing here today to say that I believe the crisis facing our city is so severe that no less than the full weight and attention of the mayor’s office is needed to make sure that we get this plan accomplished.”

In an explanatory tone, Mr. Tory said his new measures, including towing vehicles blocking major streets during rush hour and hiking fees for developers who close lanes of traffic for construction projects, would yield relief “in the next few weeks and months.”
