Hundreds of Halifax residents convened to honor those who lost their lives at 97th anniversary of the Halifax explosion on Saturday morning. On the same day in 1917, more than 1,800 people lost their lives and 9,000 were injured due to the French “Mont Blanc” munitions ship’s collision with the Norwegian ship “Imo.” The crash ignited a massive explosion in the Halifax Harbour.

Church bells tolled and guns were fired from Citadel Hill Saturday in order to mark the solemn event, whereas a memorial ceremony was also held in Fort Needham Memorial Park on Saturday. Wreaths were laid at the foot of a monument in honour of the victims of the explosion. One of the attendees at the park, Lloyd Foster, shared to have come out to pay respects to some of his family members who passed away in the blast, including his grandfather’s sister, her husband and five of her children. He stressed that “it was quite a tragedy for our family, so I’m here with my two daughters to come to the memorial to think about that loss.”

Whereas on the other hand, another attendee, Maura Donovan, alleged that “this was such a devastating event for Nova Scotia and we continue to see these kinds of things happening all around the world. And even though it was almost 100 years ago, we should never forget what could happen,” adding that “this is a beautiful community and to have all of this destroyed in a minute would just be unimaginable.”
