An Ottawa Catholic school principal, Ann Beauchamp, has overturned her decision to forbid a project on gay rights by two Grade 6 students at St. George elementary school. According to a statement released by school board spokeswoman, Mardi de Kemp, on late Monday, it was announced that the girls are now allowed to do “project on how the topic of gay rights is addressed by a Catholic high school’s equity club. The girls will be welcome to present their project at the social justice fair.”

The two students, namely Quinn Maloney-Tavares and Polly Hamilton, intended to examine gay rights in a project for a Social Justice Fair in January, which will be seen by students in Grades 4 to 6. However, principal Beauchamp vetoed the project in late November, followed by an explanation by School board officials saying that the principle was concerned about the “age appropriateness” of the materials the students wanted to present. Education Director, Julian Hanlon, mentioned at the time that “what’s being portrayed in the media is that we’re not allowing the presentation because it was on gay rights, and that’s absolutely and categorically incorrect.”

However, latest announcement confirms that Beauchamp met with students’ parents on Monday to “resolve concerns” about the would-be project and the meeting was “productive.” De Kemp stated that “all the parties involved in the meeting seemed satisfied with the outcome and we look forward to moving ahead,” adding that the girls will also be part of another project titled “Tell them from me.”
