The Belleville police department is currently probing whether or not a department official was involved in posting a tweet on Sunday that read: “Sometimes I wish the cruiser played ‘Move B—-, Get Out The Way,’ instead of using sirens.” The comment was posted on Sunday morning by “The Copper” from the account “@BPS_Finest.”

Acting Insp., Chris Barry, confirmed that the investigators are considering that a member of the force might be involved. Barry stated on Tuesday morning that “these comments have since been removed and an internal investigation has been launched to determine who was responsible for them.” He alleged that “we don’t know for sure whether it was one of our officers or not.” The Twitter handle, “@BPS_Finest,” was shut down on Monday evening. Barry alleged that “whoever posted it, shut it down on their own.” In addition to that, it was explained that department officers in charge of social media are governed by the police department’s policies and procedures, including the Police Services Act, even when off duty.

Barry elucidated that the department provides each officer with a BlackBerry, which the officers are allowed to take home and use as their personal cellphone as long as they pay any extra data usage. Barry alleged that the department can and will be checking if the post was made using a department-issued BlackBerry. However, Barry stressed that the police will not comment any further on the matter until the investigation is complete.
