The Harper government is planning to ensure that Canadian shoppers don’t get extorted at the till for products that are much cheaper in the States. The government has introduced a new legislation giving extra powers to the Competition Bureau to investigate the price gap between Canada and the US. Now, the bureau can investigate prices of items ranging from books to children’s toys.

Industry Minister James Moore mentioned in his remarks that “these price differences are real. They hurt the bottom line of hardworking families and they hurt Canadian retailers.” Moore stressed that he wants the legislation to pass so the commissioner of competition can investigate the price gaps and force companies to show documentation as to why Canadians need to pay more for things like TVs, shampoo, and Asprin. He said that “[we need] balanced and measured action to help ensure that Canadians pay the same price for the same product.”

However, at the same time it was highlighted that sometimes the price difference is legitimate due to various factors including transportation or production costs. But stressed that sometimes it’s an unfair way to take more cash out of the pockets of Canadian families and businesses. Consequently, Moore said the legislation does not allow concrete penalties for companies since the commission won’t have the ability to issue fines. Instead, the commissioner would only be able to inform the public so consumers can decide if they want to buy products that are overpriced for no good reason.
