A Sudbury man has accused Liberal Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne, to have tried to persuade him to drop out of the race for a Liberal nomination in the riding because the party wanted someone else as its candidate. According to Andrew Olivier, he was offered “a job or appointment” by two Liberal operatives, including Ms. Wynne’s deputy chief of staff, in exchange for stepping aside.

In addition to that, Mr. Olivier alleged that he was threatened that in case he did not quit, the Liberals would scrap the democratic nomination process and simply appoint a candidate instead. Mr. Olivier said he wanted to become the province’s first quadriplegic MPP. He mentioned in a statement issued on Monday that “[Ms. Wynne] has a vision for Sudbury but her vision did not include me as this candidate.” It was added that “in other words, the Ontario Liberal Party in Toronto has told me I will not be its candidate and it was out of Sudbury’s hands.”

Ms. Wynne responded to the allegations on Monday and stressed that “there were no specific offers of anything” to keep Mr. Olivier out of the race. In her remarks, Ms. Wynne pointed out that Liberals only asked him to stay involved in the party. She said that “what we did say, what I did say and others in the team said to Andrew, is ‘We hope you stay involved. We hope there are ways you want to stay involved,’” adding that “but there were no specific commitments.”
