Canadian Trade Minister, Ed Fast, has expressed sheer “disappointment” over the passage of a New Jersey Buy American bill that aims to ban use of foreign content in all state contracts. The bill was passed in the Democratic-held legislature on Thursday by a 43-25 margin, making it the latest in a series of proliferating protectionist purchasing restrictions in the U.S.

Mr. Fast’s press secretary, Max Moncaster, mentioned in a press release issued on Friday that “to spur economic growth, you need to lower trade barriers, not create new ones.” Although the bill has been passed by the legislature, The New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris Christie has the power to block it, which his party opposed along with various business groups in the state. It was highlighted that Canadian exporters are urging Mr. Christie to use his veto powers to stop a bill they say will harm both countries.

CME President and chief executive, Jayson Myers, stated that “New Jersey legislators have seemingly made it clear they do not want to do business with Canada,” adding that “they think they are protecting jobs. In reality, given the integrated nature of manufacturing, they are killing jobs in both the United States and Canada.” In addition to that, Mr. Myers alleged that “we need all levels of government in Canada and the United States to keep markets open for manufacturers from both countries.” He stressed that “free trade must be reciprocal, and right now a lot of it is just flowing north into Canada.”
