The 101-year-old war veteran tied up and robbed in his own home, Ernest Côté, has alleged that he wasn’t afraid but extremely angry at the time. Côté stated that “I was mad as a wasp when it happened.” He revealed to be extremely pleased that police made an arrest and laid charges in connection with the home invasion.

According to the police, a 59-year-old Ottawa man was arrested and charged with several offences on Friday. It said that the suspect is charged with attempted murder, robbery with violence, forcible confinement, break and enter, and using a credit card obtained by crime. At the time, the intruder impersonated to be a city employee and gained access to Côté’s condo, where he tied him up and put a bag over his head and robbed him. Côté stated that “I understand from the police they have charged him with attempted murder — if I had not freed myself I may not be here to talk to you today,” adding that “I was lucky to get out of it. There are few marks on my arms and my hands from when I extracted myself, but I am okay.”

Police has refrained from naming the suspect in custody but confirmed that he is scheduled for a court appearance today. Côté is a retired lieutenant colonel with the Canadian Armed Forces. He became the second secretary for the Department of External Affairs in July 1945 and later received France’s Legion of Honour Award in 2004 for his military service in France during the war.
