A recent poll conducted by The Abacus Data has pointed out for the first time that the Conservative Party has taken over a lead over the Liberals. The new poll found a “sizeable” improvement in public sentiment toward Prime Minister Stephen Harper, indicating an increase in Conservative fortunes ahead of the looming federal election scheduled for next October.

According to the poll, the Conservatives currently hold 34 per cent support among committed voters, whereas the Liberals were at 33 per cent, giving the Conservatives a narrow lead within the margin of error. According to the poll results published on Tuesday, half the country currently believes that Canada is headed in the right direction, which the pollster said is a “sizeable shift” in sentiment. Meanwhile, the number of respondents holding a negative view of Mr. Harper also apparently declined from 46 per cent to 38 per cent in the past nine months.

According to Abacus chairman, Bruce Anderson, the Conservatives have recently come out to be less biased party, which has reinforced its support. He said that “that’s what I see as being the big story here – the Conservatives have probably changed their approach, and that’s manifesting itself in less downward pressure on their numbers and more openness to the Prime Minister personally.” Whereas on the other hand, The Nanos Party Power Index remained largely unchanged, showing Liberals at 57 points and the Conservatives at 53 points out of 100 on the Nanos Party Power Index. The NDP followed at 49 points, the Green Party at 31 points and the BQ at 26 points
