The court has decided to send the accused in custody for allegedly attacking a 101-year-old veteran of the Second World War, Ian Bush, to the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for a 30-day assessment. Bush made a court appearance in Ottawa just before noon on Wednesday.

Prior to his court appearance, Bush met with a Royal psychiatrist at the courthouse for a few minutes. Regardless of that, the court ordered Bush to have a 30-day evaluation to assess whether he could be found criminally responsible or not. 59-year-old Bush faces charges including attempted murder, forcible confinement, and other offences.  According to the police, the suspect pretended to be a City of Ottawa employee to fool Côté to let him in on Dec. 18. Thereafter, the suspect put a plastic bag over the veteran’s head and robbed him, until Côté was able to free himself and call 911.

Upon inquiry from Bush’s brother about his behavior in the court roam, Norm Bush said that it wasn’t a really long interaction to give any comment about that. Norm Bush added that “he knows that we were there and I think he’ll take some comfort in knowing that the family was there for him today,” adding that “I think what we need to do as a family is just let the course of treatment take place. It’s the kind of thing that none of us would have anticipated, so I think we’re not looking to ask him any questions right now, we’re just pleased that he’s going to be getting the help that he needs.”
