Toronto Police ordered to evacuate several homes in the city’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood and the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force was sought on Tuesday after a woman found nine sticks of old dynamite in her late father’s belongings. According to the officials, the homeowner made the shocking discovery and alerted officials at around 10:30 a.m. Staff-Sgt. John Spanton stated that “she was emptying some belongings of a deceased relative” at the time.

Toronto Police’s chemical biological radiological nuclear and explosives team arrived at the scene at around 2:30 p.m. and isolated the dynamite bundle in a spherical explosive containment unit before it was transported for detonation. Spanton stated that “the family members didn’t know (the sticks) were there until they opened up the box” adding that “we don’t get a lot of these calls, usually more weapons or ammunition when people go through deceased’s property. Dynamite is usually pretty rare. The lady did the right thing. She notified Toronto Police and experts were sent down there, because this stuff is volatile if not handled properly.”

Even though the homeowner refused to comment on the matter or speak directly to the media, her close friend Liz Kingston explained that “her dad worked in construction a long time ago.” Kingston identified the homeowner as Patty and revealed that “she had his stuff and was going through junk. We’re all safe and the police were really nice. It said dynamite on it. It was high drama.”
