An Ontario teen travelling to receive cancer treatment, 16-year-old Xenia Ulok, along with her father, Greg, on a Porter Airlines flight were involuntarily bumped due to overbooking earlier this month. The incident took place on Dec. 17, when Ulok was going to Toronto for her chemotherapy but was bumped just before they were due to board.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Greg stated that “when we got to the gate, a lady told us something about our luggage and told us to step aside,” adding that “when I realized what was happening, I said my daughter had to get on the plane because we were going to the hospital.” Furthermore, he revealed that Xenia is undergoing treatment for lymphoblastic lymphoma. Greg stressed that the staff told them that they were being bumped from the overbooked flight because they had paid the lowest price for tickets. However, he highlighted that Porter’s policy for overbooked flights says that “no one is denied a seat until airline personnel first ask for volunteers willing to give up their reservation.” Additionally, their policy dictates that passengers involuntarily denied boarding are provided compensation for the inconvenience.

However, Greg alleged that the policy was not implemented by the staff in his case. He stated that “it said that on the website, but when I talked to employees (at the airport), they said differently. They dealt with us when everybody else was already on the plane.”
