Wildrose candidate for the Leduc-Beaumont riding, Sharon Smith, has announced her plan to run in the next provincial election despite the recent colossal blow to the party. Former Wildrose Party leader, Danielle Smith, and eight other Wildrose MLAs crossed the floor to the ruling Progressive Conservative on Dec. 17, leaving the Wildrose Party with only five MLAs in the legislature. Regardless of the troubles faced by the opposition party, Smith confidently told her supporters that she is not backing out of being the Wildrose candidate for the area.

In her remarks, Smith stated that “our Wildrose membership they were the ones that put their good faith in me to represent them in the next election and I am committed to doing that.” Speaking about the recent floor crossing, she said that “it’s obviously very disappointing. As members we put our faith in those MLAs to represent our party and to represent the government and to stand up and be that great official opposition that they’ve been for the last few years.”

In addition to that, Smith alleged that “I don’t believe for a second all of them have bought solidly into what Mr. Prentice has sold. I personally am waiting to see the changes he says he’s going to do for Alberta. I haven’t seen anything, I haven’t seen any changes. I haven’t seen changes in wait times, I haven’t seen additional housing, I haven’t seen any new schools built. I’ve heard promises but I haven’t seen anything to this point. Quite frankly it’s business as usual.”
