According to survey of 26 countries by the Environics Institute for the Americas Barometer, Canadians are only satisfied with their life only if they have “adequate income.” The survey highlighted that Latin American countries have lower incomes and weaker economies but still their people lead happier lives than Canadians. Hence, it was concluded that key to happiness for Canadians is earning enough income to buy what they need and still be able to save a little.

The survey report stated that every one in five Canadians earns enough money to save some, 35 per cent are just making ends meet but don’t have any major problems, 26 per cent are “stretched” and fail to earn enough, whereas 13 per cent make less than required and are “having a hard time.” Furthermore, the survey revealed that among those who earn enough, 47 per cent were very satisfied with life. Whereas on the other hand, only 13 per cent of those who don’t make enough to meet their needs were satisfied with their life as 42 per cent were very unsatisfied.

Executive director of Environics Institute, Keith Neuman, stated that “this is a measure of how comfortable and secure people feel and whether they have enough, which is different from how much you make.” Neuman alleged that “that really tells you about the consequences and damage of underemployment, unemployment or precarious employment … People feel they can’t rise above and enjoy their lives … but that relationship isn’t a strong as other countries where they have religion, culture and community to help them.”
