One man was shot dead and six other sustained minor to serious injuries after a crowded New Year’s Eve party in Calgary faced a hail of bullets. Even though police is still looking for the shooter, it is yet unclear whether there was one or more offenders involved.
During a press conference on Thursday, Acting Duty Inspector of the Calgary Police Service, Quinn Jacques, confessed that “at this time, we have more questions than answers.” Jacques confirmed that at least 50 people, majority of whom belonged to local “African communities,” were in attendance at the house in the 1900 block of 36th Street S.W. at the time of shooting. The shots were fired at 5 a.m., which sent one of the victims on life support at Foothills Hospital on Thursday morning. The victim’s cousin identified him as Abdullahi Ahmed, confirming that he was shot in the forehead. According to an update provided on Thursday afternoon, police confirmed that the victim died in the hospital as the first homicide victim of the city in 2015. Whereas, although the remaining six victims received minor to serious injuries, they were all stable.
Several sources have confirmed that majority victims belonged to the city’s Somali community and hence investigators have urged for co-operation from members of Calgary’s African communities. Jacques stressed that “we want members and leaders of African communities to know that our investigators are working hard to find the person or people responsible, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help.”
