According to a press release issued by the department of the defense on 31th of December, the Canadian forces were busy bombing the militants’ positions in Iraq on New Year’s Eve. It said that two military jets actively supported Iraqi security forces’ group in their operations west of Fallujah. The briefing confirmed that two Cf-18s attacked ISIS positions by using precision-guided munitions.
Canada’s Minister of foreign Affairs, John Baird, revealed that “Canada won’t expand airstrikes on ISIS to Syria. Canadian jets will continue to attack ISIS jihadists in Iraq, but won’t extend their mission to Syria.” So far, Canada has successfully deployed its weaponry, including six CF-18s with a C-150 Polaris and two CP-140 Auroram, to seize and monitor large parts of Iraq and Syria. Additionally, Baird pointed out that Canada is also training and equipping Iraqi Kurdish fighters in Northern Iraq. Highlighting that more than 145 Canadians have allegedly joined the Islamic State group and like-minded extremist organizations, he stressed that it “compels us to accept our share of responsibility” in working to defeat them.
A Canadian woman serving the Israeli military, Gill Rosenberg, received a lot of attention recently for reportedly joining a Kurdish militia fighting the Islamic State group. However, Baird condemned the act and urged Canadians not to take her as an example. He mentioned in his remarks that “obviously we are strongly and unequivocally discouraging all travel to either Iraq or Syria. If you want to fight Daesh, you should apply to join the Canadian Forces.”
