A series of serious New Year’s Day highway crashes in Kingston are being credited to abrupt snow squalls and whiteout conditions. According to Ontario Provincial Police, it began receiving calls soon after noon on Thursday. However, Sgt. William Deroos of the Napanee OPP detachment clarified that “(there are) no fatalities.” He stated that “it turned out to be just minor injuries. (We started to get calls) in the city of Kingston area, on (Hwy.) 401, that there were a number accidents that had just occurred.”

According to the officers, the largest highway crash ignited a chain-reaction that caused more than a dozen vehicles to crash eastbound just before Odessa. A driver of one of those vehicles travelling from Carrying Place to Montreal with her family, Sue Watson, explained that “the conditions were dry and then suddenly snow squalls,” adding that “(when police arrived, they) told us to get back in the car and put on our seatbelts. I could hear other cars crashing into each other.” She revealed that most of the cars crashed together just before the Old Wilton Road overpass.

Another driver coming home to Kingston, Danielle Hoekstra, alleged that “people were out waving down cars to get them to stop,” and “the cars had pulled to either side, which was lucky for us because we slid right down the middle.” Thereafter, both Watson and Hoekstra, along with other drivers, had to stop at the Odessa OPP detachment in order to file their incident reports.
