Montreal Fire department official, Ian Ritchie, stressed in a recent press release that fires are not more common during the winter as compared to other times of year and hence precautions should be adopted. He pointed out that we hear more about them because people have been hurt or killed by the fires recently. Richtie explained that during this season heating is on, fire places are running, and Christmas trees are drying up in their stands.

In his remarks, Ritchie highlighted that “there’s no real difference between number of fires in the winter and the summer.” He alleged that “it just seems that the fires we’ve seen lately there has been a loss of life. The fires may not be preventable… but the loss of life is.” Ritchie stressed that Montrealers should do a little bit of prevention in order to ensure their family’s safety. He said that “it’s been proven over and over again that smoke detectors save lives, and that’s why in the fires you hear about people have lost their lives… no smoke detectors.”

Secondly, Ritchie proposed that families should make an escape plan. He asked homeowners to “have an evacuation plan for you and your family” as “it takes 10 minutes, just sit down and have the conversation, ‘if there’s a fire this is what we’re going to do’ plan where you’ll meet outside.” Ritchie explained that “it’s the time of year when we’re doing a lot of cooking, and everyone does the same thing; they take the battery out of the smoke detector and tell themselves ‘I’ll put it back in tomorrow’ and tomorrow never comes…”
