Renowned politician and former New York Governor, Mario Cuomo, died on Thursday at the age of 82. Mr. Cuomo passed away due to natural causes in a hospital in New York. He had recently suffered from heart failure soon after his eldest son, Andrew, official started his second term as New York governor. Mr. Cuomo was hospitalized in November for a heart condition, and again the day after his son won re-election.

In his inaugural address on Thursday, Andrew Cuomo remembered his father and said that “he is in the heart and mind of every person who is here,” adding that “he is here and he is here, and his inspiration and his legacy and his experience is what has brought this state to this point. So let’s give him a round of applause.” Whereas on the other hand, a statement issued by the President of The United States, Barack Obama, recalled Cuomo to be “a determined champion of progressive values, and an unflinching voice for tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness, dignity, and opportunity.” Obama alleged that “his own story taught him that as Americans, we are bound together as one people, and our country’s success rests on the success of all of us, not just a fortunate few.”

Among many other things, Mario Cuomo is remembered for a rousing speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention criticizing then-President Ronald Reagan. Thereafter, many speculated that Cuomo will run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 1992, but he decided against it each time.
