Hydro-Quebec have confirmed that more than 150,000 of its customers are left in the dark without electricity since Sunday evening, due to fallen tree branches that are breaking due to the weight of snow and ice. According to the officials, the severe weather conditions have caused a havoc in the area.

The blackouts started on Sunday afternoon in areas near Montreal region, but since the weather prevailed, the situation worsened by the evening and spread to areas all over Montreal and elsewhere in southern Quebec. According to a statement issued by Hydro-Quebec spokeswoman, Elaine Beaulieu, the primary reason for the blackouts were fallen tree branches, which were breaking under the weight of snow and ice. Beaulieu confirmed that “our crews are presently patrolling to find out where the power outages are and trying to restore the power as soon as possible. It’s mainly due to the weather conditions.”

The weather conditions in the area worsened when heavy snow started to fall in the Quebec province on Saturday afternoon. The cold continued and the weather reached freezing rain conditions on Sunday morning, producing severe conditions for drivers and pedestrians as it got extremely slippery on the roads and caused immense electricity blackouts due to fallen branches. Moreover, the flights in the region have also been cancelled or delayed due to the severe weather conditions.
