Firefighting crew and the onlookers are praising an off-duty Mountie, Sgt. Derek King, for his heroic efforts to rescue a two-year-old girl after a house fire broke out in Surrey Thursday. Both the kid and her grandmother were present in the house and had to be treated for smoke inhalation after. However fire officials claim that the situation could have been much worse if not for the heroic actions of an off-duty Mountie.
King, a dog handler for the Surrey RCMP, was thanked by fire officials for his proactive thinking after he saw smoke and flames coming from a home in the 19000-block of 71st Avenue while out for a walk Thursday night. According to the officials, King knocked on the door immediately and the toddler’s grandmother told him that her granddaughter was trapped inside. Surrey Fire Chief, Len Garis, praised that “without any protective gear, Sgt. King entered the home to look for the child and heard her cries for help.” King had to brave obscured vision due to smoke as he found the toddler in a nearby room and picked her up to bring her to safety outside.
Consequently, the two-year-old girl and her grandmother were rushed to Langley Memorial Hospital. Garis stressed that “it’s clear that this incident would have had a very tragic outcome, but thanks to Sgt. King’s bravery he saved a young child from serious injury or worse.” Meanwhile, Garis confirmed that even though the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, it does not seem suspicious.
