Edmonton-Centre MP and co-chairman of the Canada-U.S. Permanent Joint Board of Defense, Laurie Hawn, has urged Canadians to “wake up” and report the radicalization of youth. These remarks were given by Hawn on Thursday in response to reports claiming that three Edmonton men died fighting for Islamist rebel group ISIS last fall.

According to several reports published on Wednesday, the three cousins, including Mahad Hirsi and Hamsa and Hersi Kariye, left Edmonton in October 2013. According to Mahad Harisi’s inconsolable father, Ahmed Hirsi, his son last called him from Egypt and said that he was headed to Syria. Unconfirmed reports further allege that all three cousins have been killed in airstrikes, though some family members have deny them.

In his remarks, Hawn stressed that he isn’t surprised that youths are being radicalized in Edmonton since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has openly targeted Canadians. He urged “for goodness sakes people, wake up. It’s here. We have to deal with it and it’s not necessarily going to be pretty.” Hawn alleged that “I really feel for some of the families whose sons have gone off to do this. They must be heartbroken to come to Canada for a better life and then their offspring turn around and basically desert what they’ve been given in Canada” adding that “as a Canadian, it concerns me. It annoys me, obviously, and I hate to see that happen but ISIS is recruiting in Canada heavily. We know that. They’re targeting specific groups and the Somali community is one of the groups being targeted.”
