Ontario’s New Democrats organized a rally in Sudbury on Friday in order to stress on its call for the Liberal government to fund a PET scanner for the city. The party’s candidate in the city for Feb. 5 byelection, Suzanne Shawbonquit, alleged that “people are losing their lives” but still the Liberals fail to fund the high-tech scanner in Sudbury. She alleged that “every other city has a PET scanner, and we don’t,” hence “we have to push the government.”

The PET scanner, i.e. positron emission tomography scanner, is estimated to cost around $4 million. However, the rally participants highlighted that it will not only helps better diagnose cancers but other illnesses also like dementia and lung disease. Meanwhile, a committee honoring the man who fought for the scanner until his death in 2010, Sam Bruno, has already raised $660,000 in support of bringing one here. Several members of the committee were present in the rally along with Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas.

In her remarks, Horwath alleged that the committee was an example of the “Sudbury spirit” and that her party will continue to support their efforts. She mentioned that “your community knows how to come together and rally around important causes and rally around the important things you want to improve your community.” It was added that “France has brought … 28,000 signatures on petitions into the Legislature. I’ve spoken on the issue in the Legislature. France has done the same. It’s obviously something northeastern Ontario needs and that Sudbury deserves.”
