A leading ‘right to death’ organization that is devoted to providing death with dignity, Dying with Dignity, will be removed from its charitable status in compliance with the federal revenue agency audit report. According to the agency, the organization should not have been registered as a charity in the first place.

Death with Dignity was founded in 1982 promising to work as a “health and education charity focused on promoting choice and dignity at end of life.” However a letter delivered by the Canada Revenue Agency last week alleged that the organization was “registered in error” and so will have its charitable tax status annulled. Sources claim that the charitable status of Death With Dignity Canada is anticipated to be officially annulled on Feb. 15, after which it will be left as a non-profit organization. Quite noticeably, the donations to non-profit groups are not tax-deductible.

In the lengthy audit, the revenue agency claims that the organization does not conduct “any activities advancing education in the charitable sense.” Chief executive officer of Dying with Dignity Canada, Morris, alleged that the organization offers sick Canadians information about advance care planning and patients’ rights while also providing individual support for people at the end of their lives. She mentioned that “we’ve been a registered charity for 30 years and we’ve previously had an audit — so this was not anticipated.” Having said that, Morris refrained from speculating whether the move was politically motivated. She alleged that the organization’s board will now look into ways to raise money as a non-profit and “we’re confident that we can continue.”
