Sûreté du Québec have announced to be investigating the case after a group having alleged ties with Islamic extremists hacked Terrasse-Vaudreuil’s website on Thursday night. However, town officials have persistently alleged that there’s little to worry and it is just a random incident.

Town general manager, Ron Kelley, mentioned in his remarks that “I believe it was completely random, like the thousands of other times it’s happened around the world.” He added that “I guess today was just our day.” According to the town officials, the council was first alerted about the hack around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, and the website was restored at around 7:45 a.m. on Friday. The hackers named themselves as Middle East Cyber Army and left a message at website’s home page saying that the group works for Allah, and that Islam “always will dominate.” Furthermore, the group gave comments related to Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack ending with hashtag #OPFRANCE.

According to Kelley, there’s no significance about why the small town was targeted. He said that “we have no problems or conflicting issues, no cultural issues, we don’t get political,” adding that “this had nothing to do with the municipality.” He added that although many called to report the hack attack, no one was really concerned. He stressed that the town is in no way worried or feels threated to have had any breach of private information with the attack. He explained that “it only touched our website, which is run on a server from a private company outside of city hall.”
