Prime Minister Stephen Harper has recently mentioned in a speech in Ottawa on Sunday that economy and public safety will be on top of the agenda as MP’s return to work on Monday. According to Harper, the government will start working on its new anti-terror legislation and aim to introduce it on Friday. He alleged that it includes “a range of measures … to keep Canadians safe.”

In his remarks, Mr. Harper mentioned that “these measures are designed to help authorities stop planned attacks, get threats off our streets, criminalize the promotion of terrorism and prevent terrorists from travelling and recruiting others.” Quite noticeably, the situation has evolved since the last time the MP’s had sit down for work, i.e. before the holiday break on December 16th, including the continuing steep reduction in the price of oil that has reduced $13 from around $58 to under $45.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada has also made an unanticipated move to reduce its benchmark lending rate for the first time since September 2010 by a quarter. The bank also lowered its 2015 growth projection from 2.4 per cent to 2.1 per cent. The oil price drop has increased uncertainty in the marks and the government has also a lot to worry about if it hopes to balance the books as promised. In addition to that, the government will also have to work harder in order to fulfil its promise on a pricey family tax benefit package. However refuting all criticism, Prime Minister Harper insisted Sunday that all will go ahead as planned.
