RCMP have announced to have ended their search for a man with a weapon in a neighbourhood in northern Moncton after receiving a call at around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday. According to the call, the suspect was walking down Katherine Avenue with a firearm. Thereafter, armed police officers set up blockades and canvassed homes in the area for several hours as they investigated the complaint. However, Police did not have any sighting of the suspect and the blockades were eventually removed.

The possible threat alert recalled some terrible memories for many Moncton residents, when an assailant shot three officers dead during a gun fight. A resident who has family members in the area, Claire Prevost, alleged that “there is families there. Somebody is going to get hurt and my daughter and the little one included and I also have other family that live in that area.” Another resident, Jeremy Beaulieu, said that “the RCMP definitely are not taking it lightly and they won’t ever again, due to the occurrences that happened in June, the tragic incident.”

RCMP confirmed in its remarks that it did not put the area on complete locked down as people were allowed come and go, but it in fact tried to minimize and monitor traffic so they could focus on the investigation. The review of the fatal shootings of three RCMP officers in Moncton in June had recommended the authorities to have encrypted communications system so that citizens could not listen to the scanner and post details of events as they happen.
