Police has confirmed to have arrested the suspect allegedly involved in shooting four people, killing two, at a Vaughan café in June. The long-continued manhunt ended on Friday at Highway 400, where 27-year-old Jason Hay was traveling in a vehicle with 25-year-old Tashari Bennett. The arrest was made by York Regional Police in relation to the June 24th attack at the Moka Café, near Islington Avenue and Highway 7.

Hay faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, while Bennett is charged with being an accessory after the fact and breach of recognizance. A statement issued by York Police Chief, Eric Jolliffe, mentioned “this arrest comes as a direct result of the hard work of the investigative team in our homicide unit.” He alleged that “these men and women have been working tirelessly on this investigation since this tragedy took place.”

Record shows that Hay had a long history of violence before the Moka shootings, with over 50 criminal convictions. He was earlier convicted of manslaughter for murder and sentenced to seven years in prison. At the time, Justice Kenneth Langdon described Hay as being “beyond any hope of redemption.” Thereafter, Hay was released on parole in June when he allegedly entered the café at 8:18 a.m. and started spraying bullets. Hay is now back in police custody and due to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket again on Saturday.
