Police has finally arrested a suspect in the case involving the death of two-year-old Blake Harvey who died in December 2005. The suspect in custody is Blake’s mother’s live-in boyfriend at the time, i.e. 32-year-old Kelowna resident, Ryan John Podhorodecki, who was arrested in Victoria on Thursday and charged with manslaughter.
The family of the Calgary toddler has expressed comfort to hear about the arrest after 10 years. The suspect has been transferred to Calgary and remains in custody ahead of his Nov. 3 court appearance. According to Blake’s father’s aunt, Linda Funk, “I was just really happy when they told me. It’s been so long. We’ve been waiting for so long.” She acknowledged that “it gives you a lot relief to know. It’s been a long time.” Blake died around 2 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2005, when officers and paramedics were called to Blake’s mother’s Forest Heights home in the 4500 block of 7th Avenue S.E. He was transferred to a hospital with traumatic injuries and died three days later. The boy’s babysitters alleged that he had fallen from stairs but the autopsy confirmed Blake’s death was a homicide.
Despite years since the incident, no arrests were made until now. Calgary Police Service’s homicide unit officer, Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm, explained that “we obtained further information recently that led to further evidence and the charge of manslaughter was approved by the Crown prosecutor’s office.” He refrained from elaborating on the new information that had come to light.
