A respected Calgary pilot, Bruce Evans, passed away on Sunday afternoon during an erroneous aerial maneuver at an air show in Cold Lake. Mr. Evans was flying his T-28 Trojan when it crashed at about 1:50 p.m. as witnesses confirm that the plane was flying extremely low before it disappeared.
The editor of the Cold Lake Sun newspaper, Peter Lozinski, explained that “it crashed behind the far runway. There’s a couple buildings there, there’s a radar dome and another building and a little ridge there and it crashed behind that ridge so you really couldn’t see much. There wasn’t much in the way of flames but there was a big puff of dirt and debris that went into the air right after the crash.” Additionally, Lozinski alleged that “it looked like he was attempting a loop and he came in a little too low.”
On the other hand, military officials revealed that 4 Wing emergency services were sent to the scene immediately but still found Evans deceased and that the remainder of the show was cancelled in the interest of public safety. In a statement issued by Colonel Eric Kenny of CFB Cold Lake, it was mentioned that the military is “deeply saddened by this incident and are providing our full support to Mr. Evans’ team,” adding that “we express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Mr. Evans.” Although there is no news yet about what caused the crash, the Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team of investigators to the crash site.
