siu called in after toronto police officer shoots suspect deadThe SIU has been called into investigate the incident after a Toronto police officers shot a man on Monday morning. The shooting took place a short while after another man was attacked a block away in the Yonge-Dundas area.

According to the witnesses gathered on the scene, police fired multiple shots at the suspect after he waved a knife at them following an altercation a block away. Toronto Emergency Medical Services explained that police were first called at around 5:30 a.m. after an almost-60-year-old man was assaulted at the corner of Yonge and Dundas. The man, described by witnesses as a homeless man, is now in stable condition. Reports claim that the man was stabbed during an altercation with a suspect who then fled on Dundas toward Bay and was intercepted by police. Upon encountering the suspect, he held a knife and waved it in front of the officers. Witnesses confirm that he was shot three or four times after police shouted “Put down the knife” and he lunged at them.

Soon after the incident, the SIU confirmed it has been called in to investigate the police-involved shooting. Meanwhile, Toronto police issued an update saying it had closed Dundas between Yonge and Bay for the investigation. A tweet posted by the official handle warned public to “expect delays in the area. If possible please use an alternate route. We appreciate your patience.” However, it did not provide a time for when the block would be reopened to traffic.
