B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake has publicly announced that he will not be running for third-term in the next provincial election in May next year. However, he will continue to serve as MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson and Minister of Health until the end of his current term. He mentioned that “I think this will be a good change for my family, it will be a good change for me” adding that “I know leaving now, when we have such a strong team, is better than leaving at any other time.”
Presiding over several lengthy files within the health ministry, Lakes is overlooking the implementation of an electronic health record, report on overdose deaths declared earlier this year to be a public health emergency, and the final chapter of a 2012 Health Ministry investigation into alleged privacy breaches that was deemed flawed by a labour lawyer asked to review the file. Elected in 2009 and 2013 as MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson, Lake was appointed Minister of Health on June 10, 2013. He is a veterinarian by profession.
In her comments on the news, B.C. Premier Christy Clark alleged that “Terry Lake is an invaluable member of my team, a constant champion for Kamloops and the Interior for over 14 years, serving as city councillor, mayor, and MLA.” Clark mentioned that “he brings a laser focus to public service and an unparalleled work ethic,” adding that “he always finds time to help his colleagues in caucus as an advisor and trusted sounding board. Most of all, everyone around him knows he meets every aspect of his work with honesty and integrity.”
