Canada BasketballCanada Basketball is proud to announce the 12 athletes selected for nomination to the Canadian Olympic Committee for the 2011 Pan-American Games. The 16th Pan-American Games will be hosted by Guadalajara, Mexico and will take place from October 14 – 30. The women’s basketball competition will be held from October 20 to 25th

In a draw to determine preliminary matchups, Canada was drawn into Group B, where they will play Brazil, Jamaica and Colombia. The top two teams from each group will move onto the semi-finals; while the other two teams from each group will play in the classification round for fifth – eighth.

The roster consists of Kadie Riverin (Ottawa, ON), who is in the midst of her seventh season as part of the National Team Program and has been a member of the Senior Women’s Program since 2009.

Five members of the team were also on this summer’s Development Women’s National Team that competed at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzen, China. The team finished in sixth place, which is the highest Canada has finished at the women’s basketball event since 2001.

Paige Crozon (Humboldt, SK), Isidora Purkovic (Calgary, AB) and Kellie Ring (Ottawa, ON) were all members of the Junior Women’s National Team that finished fifth at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women. The team finished with an 8-1 record and is the only Canadian team ever to enter the quarter-final round at any FIBA World Championship undefeated.

Allison McNeill (Salmon Arm, BC), will serve as the team’s head coach. McNeill is in her 14th season as a coach of the National Team Program, 10 of which have been with the Senior Women’s National Team. A pair of Canadian university assistant coaches, Erin McAleenan (University of Alberta) and Dani Sinclair (University of Victoria), will serve as McNeill’s assistants.

This will be Canada’s 14th appearance at the women’s basketball event at the Pan-American Games. In the last games in 2007, when the event was hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they finished fourth. Their best finish came in 1999 when they won the silver medal on home soil when event was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have won the bronze medal three times in 1967 (Winnipeg, Manitoba), 1979 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and 1987 (Indianapolis, USA).

Below is the roster of 12 athletes selected for nomination to the Canadian Olympic Committee for the 2011 Pan-American Games as well as the team staff.
