MIKE BABCOCK POSTGAME: DECEMBER 15, 2016

On losing in the shootout tonight:

We hit a bar and two posts [in the shootout]. In saying that, let’s be honest, we did tons of good things. It says on this sheet that we directed 85 shots on net that way. It was a pretty good night. I thought we made some big mistakes – they got a breakaway on the power play, they got a breakaway with four minutes left. In saying that, we had the puck a ton to say the least and multiple, multiple chances. We’re real snakebitten around the net right now. Just keep grinding and it’ll go your way. Just keep doing good things.

On the play of Matthews’ line:

I thought Hyman was unbelievable tonight and that line had a lot of time in the zone. I thought Marner – that was Marner’s best game in a while and I thought he was real solid too. We had lots of guys have lots of opportunity tonight. I haven’t looked at the game totally, we go through all the chances in between the periods and that. I thought it was a pretty good game for us, we just didn’t score.

On killing off a four-minute penalty:

It was a huge kill for us. We gave up the 5-on-3, which I didn’t like to but we had a 5-on-3 power play ourselves and didn’t score. We got a power play goal at the end of the first period there, but we didn’t score on the 5-on-3 and we have to. We have to finish on the 5-on-3.

On Frederik Andersen deserving a better result:

Yeah, but Freddy isn’t alone — it’s the team. Just keep grinding. Nobody feels sorry for anybody in the National Hockey League. You suck it up and find a way to win games and that’s the bottom line.

On why he changed the order of shooters in the shootout from past games:

It didn’t work. Today we have – their goalie didn’t make one save but he made all three, if that makes any sense. A bar and two posts, that’s just the way it goes. They hit a post too on their first shot. I think Holland, if I’m not mistaken, fanned on the shot too and it went through his legs. That’s the way it goes sometimes. We did lots of good things and we’ve just got to keep moving on.

On if Matthews was next to shoot if the shootout continued:

No.

On Corrado’s frustration over not playing:

He gets paid to tell me stuff so he told me. This is what I’m disappointed in – I’m disappointed he feels that way. If you think me liking you has anything to do with whether you play or don’t play, you’re missing the boat big time. I love the guys and I’m hoping for all of them that they do well. Whether you go in the lineup or not is based on how you play, period, nothing personal. It becomes personal and it’s just unfortunate that he feels that way. It’s too bad. We talk quite a bit and we’ll talk again. As a young guy he’s frustrated, he had his chance with the media today and that’s life.

MITCH MARNER POSTGAME: DECEMBER 15, 2016

On how he felt after scoring his goal:

Relief. It was a great D-to-D by Polak and [Hunwick] there and a quick out pass.

On scoring chances not being converted into goals:

We’ve just got to make sure we’re always around the net. That’s a big part of what we’ve got to do going forward is making sure we’re taking away the eyes of the goalie. These goalies are so good that if they see a puck it’s for sure not going in. We’ve just got to make sure we’re moving our feet and getting to the net.

On the pace of tonight’s overtime:

Obviously it’s pretty thrilling to watch, I’m sure, as a fan. As a player you just want to try and get chances for your team and limit theirs. I thought we were moving well in overtime and we had a couple of chances.

On if he felt he was getting chances to score prior to tonight’s game:

Yeah, obviously [Bozak] and [van Riemsdyk] were moving the puck very well, I thought. We were getting pucks around the net, we just weren’t getting the bounces too well. I think just going forward we need to make sure we’re around the net more often and we’re getting those second opportunities.

AUSTON MATTHEWS POSTGAME: DECEMBER 15, 2016

On tonight’s game:

It was a really structured game, there wasn’t too much given to each team, it was pretty defensively structured. I think it was a tight game. We did a lot of things right, we could clean up some things obviously but we’re forcing a lot of games into OT and shootouts and stuff so those are things that, as a team, we need to bear down and make sure we get that extra point.

On the team’s defensive structure:

I thought we were pretty good down low forcing them up the wall, not letting them turn back. They’ve got some pretty skilled forwards – big, heavy forwards that can create some offence and some damage down low. I think that was a key for us.

On what he does when he’s scoring consistently:

You just go out there and play hockey and continue to shoot the puck. I think every game myself, Hyman, Willy [Nylander] continue to gel more and more. We’re kind of finding each other more and more out there and really have a sense of where each other are at pretty much all the time. I think we just want to keep that going.

On opening the scoring against his hometown team:

It great. It’s always fun to score goals, it’s what I like to do and going into this game I just looked at it as another game. Obviously you’re playing your hometown team so that’s kind of special, but I tried to not let that get too heavy on myself. Just go out there and play.

MORGAN RIELLY POSTGAME: DECEMBER 15, 2016

On tonight’s overtime period:

Lots of action, we’re getting chances but we didn’t win it and we didn’t close it out. That’s the biggest thing.

On what the team can do to regroup after a close loss:

Practice, go over video, talk about how we can improve and look forward to the next game because it’s a big one.

On if he’s seen three shootout attempts hit the post before:

I haven’t but we saw it tonight. Obviously it bit us tonight.
