On Day 3 of Yonex Open Japan 2013, five Japanese players had clinched quarter-final spots in Women’s Singles and two in Men’s Singles. The biggest surprise was the defeat of BWF World Championships bronze medallist PV Sindhu (India) by qualifier Akane Yamaguchi with 21-6, 21-17.

Shizuka Uchida also made an upset of recent Adidas China Masters runner-up Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (Thailand) with 19-21, 21-15 and 21-14 victory. The other Japanese to enter the quarter-finals include Yui Hashimoto, Sayaka Takahashi and Minatsu Mitani (7).

In Men’s Singles draw, Japanese qualifier Jun Takemura  was a straight-games victor over eighth seed Hu Yun (Hong Kong) with 21-18, 21-17, while his senior, Kenichi Tago (7), took 70 minutes to beat Marc Zwiebler of Germany with 21-16, 19-21and  21-14.

Similarly, India also had a successful day in Men’s Singles as Japan. Haseena Sunilkumar (HS) Prannoy grabbed a shocking victory against Jan O Jorgensen (Denmark) with 21-14, 13-21 and 21-17.

Indian player Kidambi Srikanth entered his first Superseries quarter-finals by outplaying giant-killer Kazuteru Kozai of Japan with 21-12, 21-16 in 32 minutes. Another Indian, Ajay Jayaram, survived a long three-game match against Yuichi Ikeda (Japan) with 21-13, 11-21 and 21-18. While Anand Pawar was the only Indian Men’s Singles player to lose on the day against top seed and defending champion Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) with 21-12, 21-16.

Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, World Champions in Men’s Doubles, haven’t dropped a game in their last two Superseries campaigns and achieved their 12th straight-games win in a row, beating Yuya Komatsuzaki/Hiroki Takeuchi (Japan) with 21-19, 21-19 to advance into the quarter-finals. Their closest challengers, Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen (Denmark, 2) and Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan (China, 4) also made it to the quarter-finals. However, local hopes Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa (3) were defeated with 21-14, 21-12 against China’s Chai Biao/Hong Wei.

In Women’s Doubles, top seeds Ma Jin and Tang Jinhua of China enjoyed victory against Yuriko Miki/Koharu Yonemoto with 21-10, 19-21 and 21-14. Ma and Tang will face each other in the Mixed Doubles quarter-finals as Ma Jin with Xu Chen dismissed Japan’s Hashiru Shimono/Wakana Nagahara with 21-13, 21-10, while Chai Biao/Tang Jinhua have beaten Lee Chun Hei/Chau Hoi Wah (Hong Kong), with 21-12, 21-19.

World Junior champion Kento Momota’s match in men singles draw was the longest one of the day against Vietnam veteran Nguyen Tien Minh. Tien Minh emerged victorious with 21-17, 19-21 and 21-15.
